Conquering the Common Core

Conquering the Common Core

In the Classroom, Common Core

Are you anxious about the Common Core State Standards?

The CCSS are intended to provide a consistent understanding of what students should learn in order to be successful in college and the workforce.  By the same token, they also help teachers and parents know how best to help students prepare for the future.

While the standards offer guidance on what to teach, it’s up to individual teachers to decide how to implement them in the classroom.  The task can be overwhelming, to say the least.

But you didn’t really think we’d leave you hanging, did you?  IXL is fully aligned to the CCSS, so you can focus on your students’ math progress, rather than worry about how to plan your next lesson.

Here are a few ways IXL can help you implement the CCSS in your classroom:

  • Stay organized with a printed list of standards.  IXL offers a complete list of Common Core State Standards and the IXL skills that correlate to each one, which you can find under the State Standards tab.  Print a copy and use it as a checklist to keep you organized as you teach or assign math skills to your class.
  • Easily point students to practice skills.  Each skill is already aligned to a specific standard cluster, so students can simply click the skill name on the list of standards and be brought directly to the skill to start practicing.  When it comes to test prep, there’s no extra effort required.
  • Encourage students to track their success.  When viewing the list of standards from their accounts, students can see their SmartScore (a precise measure of achievement) displayed next to each skill.  You can use this feature to encourage friendly competition and get students invested in their own learning.
  • Access in-depth reports on student performance.  While the SmartScore is a great self-assessment tool for students, teachers generally want more details on how students are performing on specific math skills.  IXL reports let you track your students’ progress toward meeting the CCSS in real time, so you always know where students are excelling and where they might need some extra help.

In addition, IXL can also help educate parents about the CCSS.  IXL’s State Standards tab enables parents to learn about the Common Core, view sample problems, and see their child’s grade level expectations for the entire school year.  This information empowers parents to offer better guidance and encouragement at home, further ensuring that students are well-prepared for the future.
