Reflecting on 2012

As 2012 draws to a close, we can’t help but look back and reflect on the year behind us.  There was much to celebrate at IXL; we released Geometry content for high school, launched a live webinar series, and went social with Facebook, Twitter, and The IXL Blog.

What we celebrate most, however, is all of you!  We appreciate your enthusiasm for IXL, and we love hearing your stories—whether you’re a proud parent, a busy teacher, or an involved administrator.

Time inevitably brings change, but know that whatever the New Year brings, some things always stay the same—like our commitment to advancing education through truly transformative web-based technologies.

We look forward to seeing you in 2013!

Until then, here’s a quick glance of the past year at IXL:

  • 50 U.S. states used IXL, with California having the most subscriptions
  • 189 countries used IXL, including Greenland, Tonga, Madagascar, Uzbekistan, and Aruba
  • 3.4 million students logged in and practiced on IXL
  • 17.3 million hours of practice were completed by signed-in users
  • 43.9 million medals were awarded for skill mastery
  • 2.7 billion problems were answered by signed-in users

Why does IXL lower the score when you get something wrong? It takes hours to just finish a skill because of this feature. Can you remove it?

IXL’s SmartScore is intended to measure students’ true understanding of a topic, which is why the questions get harder as students progress through a skill and why more points are taken away when students answer a harder question incorrectly. (We do recognize that every student learns at a different pace, so we don’t penalize students heavily for missed questions early in their practice sessions.) Once a score of 90 or higher is reached, the student can feel confident that her or she really understands the skill!

I understand the idea that 90% indicates to us that they really understand the skill — however my students are competing for Mastery… and some of the mastery takes them beyond the standard expectation… Therefore it would be ideal for an administrator to be able to adjust the smartscore — or set something to allow 90% to show mastery! Some of my kids that get to 90% have in fact proven mastery!

Hi Karen, thanks for your feedback! We’ll pass it along to our development team. We’d also suggest directing students verbally or in writing to achieve at least a 90.
