Introducing IXL Language Arts

August 27, 2013

At Home, In the Classroom

What five-letter word becomes shorter when you add two letters to it? Short!

Who says grammar and vocabulary can’t be fun? IXL brings language arts to life next month! IXL Language Arts will offer over 30 topics for grades 2-4—with more skills and grades to come.

We’re also pleased to present creative new question types, including ordering items through drag-and-drop, as well as interactive editing exercises.

IXL Language Arts topics will include:

  • Irregular plurals
  • Subject-verb agreement
  • Comparative adjectives
  • Coordinating conjunctions
  • Homophones
  • Synonyms
  • …and much more!

For a sneak peek of IXL Language Arts in action, check out our new video.  If you’d like to be notified as soon as Language Arts is ready, you can sign up on our Coming Soon page.  We can’t wait to share it with you!

Please inform when the IXL Language Arts program is available. Thanks.

The IXL Blog September 9, 2013 at 4:18 pm

Hi, Alexander. IXL’s language arts skills for grades 2-4 are now available on our website:

Aykhan September 9, 2013 at 2:31 am

Hi, I can’t see my performance on all skills (ELA and Math) in the Report card section …

The IXL Blog September 11, 2013 at 5:05 pm

Hi, Aykhan. If you could please contact our technical support team at, they’d be happy to help you with this!

Tamara September 15, 2013 at 5:25 pm

My 3 children have ixl through school and it was very beneficial for learning and playing catch up for an English Language Learner in reviewing vocabulary as they worked on math concepts. I saw the information that you were planning to add a language piece. I received an email that said it had been added. I see that the language piece is added for 2nd through 4th graders and this would be beneficial to our family, but I am not sure how we access this. If there is a school memebership, is the new language art piece separate? Are we only able to access it if we have an individual/family memebership?

The IXL Blog September 16, 2013 at 5:16 pm

Hi, Tamara. We’re so glad to hear your children are enjoying IXL math. In regards to language arts, are you located outside of the U.S.? IXL language arts is available for both schools and families, but it is currently accessible on the U.S. edition only.

Horatiu September 23, 2013 at 2:09 am

There are no Language Arts reports on!

The IXL Blog September 24, 2013 at 2:22 pm

Hi, Horatiu. I’m afraid IXL language arts subscriptions are available on the U.S. edition only.

Horatiu September 25, 2013 at 9:11 pm

In the U.S. edition do we have to pay extra for language arts subscriptions. Language art subscriptions are included in the reports ?

The IXL Blog September 27, 2013 at 10:04 am

Yes, there is an additional cost for language arts, but we do offer a discounted price if users subscribe to both subjects (math and language arts). Language arts subscriptions do include all reports that you would normally get with a math subscription.

Horatiu September 25, 2013 at 10:01 pm

Language art subscriptions contain only sample problems ?

The IXL Blog September 27, 2013 at 4:10 pm

Hi, Horatiu. Like math, each language arts subscription provides unlimited access to questions in hundreds of skills.

Horatiu September 25, 2013 at 10:07 pm

For UK edition language art subscriptions will available in future ?

The IXL Blog September 27, 2013 at 4:11 pm

Currently, we don’t have any set plans to create international editions of language arts, but we will certainly let users know if that changes.

When is 1st grade and 7th grade language arts coming? Will 1st grade also cover adjectives, capitalization, and punctuation?

The IXL Blog October 7, 2013 at 4:52 pm

Hi, Jay. We’ll be well into middle school grades by this time next year, and we plan to work on 1st grade after that. And yes, 1st grade will cover adjectives, capitalization, and punctuation.

Lindsey October 8, 2013 at 11:58 pm

Hey IXL people!

We currently have a year’s subscription to math ixl and have paid for each of our three school aged kids to have an account. We have enjoyed math ixl greatly and are very interested in buying the language arts as well, but exactly HOW much extra would it be for us? I keep trying to find somewhere on the site where the prices are listed for someone who is already a subscriber and am having difficulty. Thanks!

The IXL Blog October 9, 2013 at 5:08 pm

Hi, Lindsey –

If you already have an existing membership and would like to add language arts, the price will be pro-rated to reflect the amount of time left in your membership. You can see exactly how much this would be by following these steps:

Sign in to your parent profile
Click on the drop-down menu under “Welcome, Parent!”
Click “Manage your account”
Select the “add language arts ” link in the Membership information box

You’re also welcome to contact our membership services team at or 877-282-4400; they’d be happy to help out!

Dan October 21, 2013 at 7:14 am

Can you hint as to whether you’ll be adding 5th, 6th, and/or 7th grade Language Arts modules during the 2013-2014 school year?

The IXL Blog October 28, 2013 at 10:44 am

Hi, Dan. We don’t have exact dates yet, but we’re currently working hard to expand our existing language arts grades, along with grade 5. We will be well into middle school grades by this time next year. If you’d like to be notified as soon as these new grades become available, you’re welcome to sign up at

Joseph Somers November 7, 2013 at 4:53 pm

I don’t see 6th grade english. Can you put 6th grade english on there?

The IXL Blog November 11, 2013 at 11:15 am

Hi, Joseph. Our development team is currently hard at work on language arts for grades 5-8. If you would like to be notified when it is ready, you can sign up here:

Noah Earley November 20, 2013 at 9:35 am

I have trouble some times on problems in language arts that dosent make sense to me because it wasent explained. I think there should be an note pad so teachers/parents can explain for me, like email, only just for ixl. maybe for all subjects.

The IXL Blog November 20, 2013 at 2:10 pm

Hi, Noah. Great idea! We’ve passed your suggestion on to our development team. In the meantime, if you are having trouble with a skill, we suggest that you go talk to your teacher or parents in person.

Noah Earley November 21, 2013 at 3:29 pm

That would be great! only what if if they are busy and some where else what could i do then wait?

The IXL Blog November 22, 2013 at 11:35 am

Hi, Noah. You can always work on another IXL skill or something else in the meantime! We’re sure that your parents or teacher would be happy to help as soon as they are available.

Zara August 24, 2014 at 9:07 am

I have a membership and i get rewards for maths but not for LA. It say that i have to upgrade. if i take both maths and LA i get a discount on language if i am not wrong. what will be the price for language then after the discount. if there is a fixed amount, please tell me. and if i have a memebership for 2 children, will the dicount be for both.

The IXL Blog August 25, 2014 at 1:28 pm

Hi, Zara. Yes, there is a discount if you have both a math and language arts membership. There is also an additional discount for each child you add to your account! You can find our pricing on our membership page. Please keep in mind that IXL Language Arts is currently only available for the U.S. edition of IXL. If you have any questions about adding language arts or another child to your account, you can also contact and your account manager can help you!

Zara November 9, 2014 at 12:41 pm

Can you please tell me if i have member ship for two children , can i take language for one child and maths for the other child. if so can you please tell me what is the exact price..i went to the membership page but it didnt tell me the exact price neither how can i switch to la. so basically i want one math membership and one la memebership. . please tell me the exact price for both children.

The IXL Blog November 10, 2014 at 9:43 am

Hi Zara – at this time, when you purchase a family membership for multiple students, the price does not change if only one of the students on your account use only one of the subjects. So, if you were to purchase a yearly membership for both math and language arts for two students, the price would be $149/year. Alternatively, you can purchase a monthly membership for both math and language arts for two students, which would cost $17.95/month. If you have further questions, please contact and we’d be happy to help!

zara November 20, 2014 at 2:06 pm

thanks alot…this is what i was asking for…

Joanne February 7, 2015 at 3:52 am

My kids have math student accounts through their school and I want to add Language Arts but want the accounts connected in the app. Is there a way to add to the student account and pay for it myself?

The IXL Team February 9, 2015 at 8:58 am

Hi Joanne – we’d be happy to assist you! Please send us an email at or call us at (877) 282-4400 ext. 1.

Stven June 20, 2015 at 9:57 am

The IXL Team June 22, 2015 at 9:27 am

Hi Stven, we are working on awards for language arts and hope to have them done in the near future, but we don’t have an exact date yet. Stay tuned!
