IXLers help beautify the San Francisco Zoo & Gardens

March 26, 2015

Life at IXL

What’s better than spending a sunny day at the zoo? Spending the day at the zoo while helping to spruce up the animals’ living spaces! IXL employees volunteered a Saturday morning earlier this month to participate in the San Francisco Zoo & Gardens’ “Renew the Zoo” program. We weeded, shoveled, and even salsa’d – read on to learn more!

We showed up at 8 a.m., some of us feeling a bit sleepy – but the zoo knew just how to wake us up, leading us volunteers in a salsa dancing warmup to get our joints loosened up. We then picked up tools and supplies – gloves, trash bags, shovels, wheelbarrows – as we listened to our instructions for the day.

IXLers split into two groups. One team was responsible for pulling weeds from plant beds and a small garden where bamboo was being cultivated to feed the zoo’s red pandas.

Meanwhile, the other group worked in the petting zoo area, digging up and removing decomposed granite to make way for new sod, while chickens wandered around them.

While we worked, we also got to enjoy a behind-the-scenes look at the zoo: a horse eating its breakfast, a beautiful ram that a few lucky IXLers got to feed, and zoo employees taking a pair of donkeys for a walk!

After we finished, we had the opportunity to explore the zoo, a great reward for volunteering (in addition to feeling good about contributing our time)! “I volunteered because it was a family affair, and I was able to bring my husband and son to give back to the community,” said recruiting manager Karen Penner.  “We had a great day!”
