Big news: IXL’s high school curriculum now includes science and social studies!
We’ve added two new courses to our high school curriculum: biology and civics & government. With this addition, our science and social studies content spans kindergarten all the way to high school. IXL also provides a full K-12 math and English language arts curriculum, making it the perfect solution for students of all ages.
Let’s dive into the new curriculum!
IXL Science
IXL’s comprehensive science curriculum helps students develop their reasoning and critical thinking skills while learning about the world around them. IXL Science covers biology, chemistry, earth and space science, life science, physics, science and engineering practices, and more.
IXL Science is fully aligned to the Next Generation Science Standards and all state standards. Plus, research shows that schools using IXL score as much as 16 percentile points higher in science on state assessments.
High school biology
In high school, biology is typically taught in 9th or 10th grade. Many states require an end-of-course assessment for high school biology, and our new content provides excellent preparation for these exams.
IXL’s high school biology curriculum covers the following topics:
- Science foundations: Reinforce understanding of scientific inquiry and foundational scientific concepts to prepare for hands-on, experiential learning in the classroom.
- Structures and processes of living things: Discover the characteristics of living things, biomolecules, cell structure and functions, bioenergetics, and organization and homeostasis in multicellular organisms.
- Inheritance and variation of traits: Learn about protein synthesis, reproduction, and patterns of genetic inheritance. Students will also learn about biotechnology and its applications in the modern world.
- Ecology: Explore cycles of matter and energy in ecosystems, population dynamics, ecological relationships, and the importance of biodiversity to ecosystem health.
- Evolution: Learn about the history and evidence of evolution and classification, and investigate how evolutionary principles influence change in the natural world.

IXL Social Studies
IXL’s comprehensive social studies curriculum helps students learn about the world and their responsibilities in society, preparing them to be future citizens and leaders. IXL Social Studies covers a wide range of topics, including U.S. and world history, civics and government, economics, cultural celebrations, geography, global studies, and more.
IXL Social Studies is fully aligned to the state standards for all 50 U.S. states.
High school civics & government
Civics & government can be taught any time throughout high school. Many states require a civics assessment, and our curriculum helps students prepare for these exams!
IXL’s high school civics & government curriculum covers the following topics:
- Origins of U.S. government: Discover various types of governments, the major influences on the development of U.S. government, and key moments in early government from the Declaration of Independence to the Constitution Convention.
- Fundamentals of U.S. government: Learn about the Constitution and its amendments, explore the three branches of government in detail, and learn about state and local governments and legal systems.
- Civil rights and liberties: Explore the rights guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution, analyze the Bill of Rights and learn about landmark Supreme Court decisions relating to civil rights and civil liberties. Students will also learn about citizenship and naturalization processes, and the responsibilities of citizenship.
- Elections and political parties: Learn about the U.S. election process, including the two-party political system, presidential elections, and methods of political participation.
- Economic policy: Discover fundamentals of economic systems and how they relate to systems of government. Students will also learn about government systems, and about the ways that government collects revenue to fund those services.
