Updates to the IXL LevelUp™ Diagnostic for ELA

This fall, IXL introduced the new LevelUp Diagnostic for ELA, a comprehensive assessment for grades PreK–12. After monitoring early usage and gathering more performance data, we’ve refined how Reading Benchmark scores are calculated to improve the way results are translated into grade proficiency levels.

What’s new:

  • Refined scoring: We’ve fine-tuned the algorithm that translates results into reading scores. Now, the scores you see reflect grade-level proficiency even more precisely.
  • Historical score adjustments: As of September 10, Reading Benchmark scores have been recalculated automatically. You’ll see updated results right away—no retesting is needed.

FAQ

Q: Why do some Reading scores look lower than before?

A: With the refined scoring, students’ scores are now more closely aligned to grade-level proficiency. Because of this adjustment, it’s normal to see scores shift downward—sometimes by about 100 points.

Q: Do students need to retake the Reading Benchmark?

A: No. All response data is still valid, and historical scores have been automatically recalculated.

Q: When will recommendations be updated?

A: Students’ personalized skill recommendations will automatically refresh within the next 1–2 weeks.

Q: As a teacher, how can I talk to parents about the updated scores?

A: If questions come up, you can reassure both students and families that knowledge and abilities haven’t gone down—the assessment has always provided accurate information about students’ abilities. The update simply means scores now reflect performance more clearly. Students’ progress and growth are still reflected in their results, and updated recommendations will continue to guide them to the right next skills.

Q: How can I be confident in the new scores?

A: IXL uses proven, research-based methods to design and score assessments. With more student data now available, we’ve strengthened the evidence base for our scoring, ensuring scores align even more closely with true student ability.

Q: Are there any other changes or recommendations I should know about?

A: Yes. A few refinements and best practices will help you get the most out of the benchmark:

  • Score caps: Students’ scores are now capped at three grade levels above their rostered grade (e.g., a 4th grader capped at 700+). This ensures results remain valid even for extreme outlier students.
  • Extended time limit: The Reading Benchmark, when taken alone, now allows up to 90 minutes to reduce timing out. The full ELA benchmark continues to allow two hours.
  • Recommended use:
    • For the most complete picture of student performance, we recommend administering the full ELA benchmark (Reading + Writing & Language).
    • To support stamina, consider breaking the assessment you choose into multiple sittings (for example, two sessions of up to an hour each).
