How to spot and address your child’s learning gaps

Learning has looked different for many families lately. With school closures in the spring and virtual or hybrid learning this fall, you may be wondering if your child has missed out on any essential concepts that they’ll need moving forward.

The good news is that IXL can help. Let’s take a look at a few powerful tools that help you spot and address your child’s learning gaps, all within IXL. (If you’re brand new to IXL, our family guide is a good place to start and it’s also available in Spanish).

Get a complete picture of your child’s current knowledge

The IXL Real-Time Diagnostic pinpoints your child’s grade-level proficiency in math and English language arts. By answering diagnostic questions for as little as 45 minutes per subject, your child will unlock a full portrait of their current knowledge levels, showing precisely what they already understand and where they still have room to grow. (This doesn’t have to be done in one sitting—you can break it up in whatever way works best for your child. And rest assured that their progress will be automatically saved!)

The Real-Time Diagnostic also creates a personalized action plan of the exact skills your child should work on next. By following these targeted recommendations, your child will fill any knowledge gaps, and make more progress, faster.

Identify trouble spots

Wondering how to help your child with areas they’re struggling with? Head to the Trouble Spots report. It pinpoints the concept that your child hasn’t grasped yet, and you can even see the exact questions your child received and missed.

Select a trouble spot, and pick a few of the missed questions to work though together with your child. If either of you need a refresher on the concept itself, head to the IXL skill and answer a question incorrectly. You’ll receive a complete explanation with a review of the concept, as well as a step-by-step guide for how to solve the question. Always encourage your child to read through these explanations, so that they can learn from their mistakes and deepen their understanding of the topic!

Track your child’s progress

As your child continues to work on IXL, you’ll be able to see all of their progress in IXL Analytics. These reports can help you ensure that your child is meeting the learning expectations you set for them—whether you have specific usage goals or want to see their overall progress.

By checking in on these reports, you can play an active role in your child’s learning. Learn more about how to use IXL Analytics to your advantage in our guide (also available in Spanish).
