IXL strategies for school closures

While in-person instruction is the norm for most classrooms, that’s not always possible. Sometimes schools have to reduce their in-person instruction days or temporarily close, which means educators need to hold virtual or hybrid classes. These forms of learning come with their own challenges, and IXL is here to help.

Whether your students are in the classroom or learning virtually, IXL can help make sure their experience is fun, engaging, and effective.

Make a plan with implementation guides

IXL has several implementation guides showing simple and effective ways that teachers can use IXL in their classroom during distance learning. Each guide gives you an easy three-step strategy to keep the learning going:

If your class is spending some time in the classroom and some time at home, we also have a guide covering hybrid learning.

Inspire students with classroom engagement tools

These IXL features help make instruction more fun and interesting for students, no matter where they are, all while providing meaningful insights into their progress.

Live Classroom

Live Classroom lets you see what your students are doing on IXL in real time. Monitor their activity and send messages to your learners, whether they need support or you just want to congratulate them for doing a good job.

IXL Leaderboards

Create a custom IXL Leaderboard to spark your students’ competitive spirits and motivate them to learn. You can even coordinate with an administrator at your school to set up a school-wide leaderboard, and get your students to compete against other classes.

Enable independent learning

When a student gets stuck in a skill or is ready to move on to a new topic, IXL provides a number of readily-available resources to help them learn, self-remediate, and make progress without teacher intervention.

Learn with an example

Before a student starts working on a skill, they can use the “Learn with an example” button to get a quick mini-lesson on the key concepts involved, as well as a step-by-step guide taking them through an example question.

Video tutorials

Next to the “Learn with an example” button, many IXL Math and ELA skills also have a button to watch a video tutorial. These expert-led videos break down topics even further, using visual and audio components to illustrate skills in detail.

Answer explanations

Students answering questions on IXL receive immediate feedback, including step-by-step explanations on questions they answer incorrectly. These explanations walk learners through how to get the correct answer, so they can recognize their mistakes and make progress.

Skill recommendations

If students get stuck while practicing, they can also find in-skill recommendations below each skill. These recommendations cover foundational concepts that will help them better understand the topic they were struggling with. Once learners have reviewed and built their confidence, they can return to the original skill when they’re ready to try again.

Has a learner finished their work and now they’re ready to move on? IXL also offers personalized suggestions for skills students can work on based on their Real-Time Diagnostic results and practice history. With IXL Recommendations, students can easily take ownership of their learning by choosing skills targeted to their individual needs.
