Contextualize progress with typical growth data
Monthly growth norms describe how students grow—on average—throughout the school year. Specifically, growth norms show the typical growth of students in the same rostered grade who started at the same overall Diagnostic level. This data enables educators to make informed comparisons between their own students and students across the country!
Growth norms are a powerful tool to regularly monitor students’ progress and evaluate them in fuller context. With this information, you can make stronger instructional decisions, develop targeted intervention strategies, and implement more effective test prep!
Keep in mind that growth norms are not the same as growth goals. Growth norms data shows how students’ scores, on average, progress each month; they do not set target scores that students should achieve.
How to find growth norms in IXL
Growth norms are available directly in IXL Analytics, making it easy and seamless to see how students’ Diagnostic growth compares to national averages.
IXL Teacher Analytics
Teachers can access growth norms data in the Student Diagnostic Growth report.
In the line graph, select the “Compare typical growth” checkbox to add growth norms to the report. This enables you to see how students’ actual growth compares to the typical monthly growth for students in the same grade who started at the same level.
You’ll also see how a student is performing overall relative to their growth norms in the “Growth” column of the results table.
