Sugarcane named one of AASL’s Best Websites for Teaching & Learning

July 10, 2017

At Home, In the Classroom

We’re honored to announce that Sugarcane, a product created by IXL Learning that allows anyone to create their own learning games, has been recognized as one of the 2017 Best Websites for Teaching & Learning by the American Association of School Librarians (AASL)! The annual awards program applauds 25 websites that “provide enhanced learning and curriculum development for school librarians and their teacher collaborators.” To date, over 10,000 games have been created on Sugarcane.

Haven’t explored Sugarcane yet? Play some games or make your own at (it’s free!)or keep reading to see how Sugarcane can put a new spin on your learning!

Released in 2016, Sugarcane allows you to enter the information you want to learn about any topic and turn it into any of 18 game types, including Recall them All, Put in Order, That’s a Match, and many other colorful and creative formats. You can then share your game with others via Facebook, Twitter, email and more. Or, search for and play games that other users have created!

Sugarcane offers a fun and easy way for learners of all types to challenge their knowledge and explore new topics. For example: you might create a Concentration game to match periodic table elements to their symbols to study for your chemistry test, or use Flash Cards to prepare you for your Spanish vocabulary quiz. If you’re a social studies teacher, you could create an activity that challenges students to name each state’s capital. Or, if you just want to see which of your friends knows the most about Disney movies and their attributes, you could make a game for that too!

Hello, I have really loved exploring sugarcane site and would love to take this site for my students use. However I would like more help about it. Is there any blog which would help me answer my questions?

If I have created a data set and based on it created my games is there any way which I can share it with my students in the class to play? I would like the students to be able to use the leaderboard. Do the students have to signup or have a new account to be able to play the games and use the score.

Hi Shilpa–We’re glad you’re enjoying Sugarcane! Students must sign up in order to use the leaderboard, but they can use existing Google or Facebook accounts if you wish. If you just want them to play a game, there’s no need to sign in.

You can also share your data set or game on Twitter, Facebook, Google Classroom, or through traditional e-mail by going to the main page of your game or data set and clicking the “share” button in the top right of the screen.

If you have any other questions about how to use Sugarcane with your students, we’d be happy to help! Just reach out to us at
