Life at IXL

A group of IXL employees recently spent a hands-on morning volunteering at Habitat for Humanity of Durham. Habitat for Humanity builds, repairs, and renovates homes as part of their mission to keep communities strong—and IXLers were able to learn some building skills as they helped out!

The mission of Habitat for Humanity is to provide affordable housing for low-income families. Families receive a zero-interest home mortgage and the proceeds are used to fund the construction of other Habitat for Humanity homes. Instead of a traditional down payment, Habitat homeowners build “sweat equity” by taking part in at least 250 hours of Habitat for Humanity volunteering.

During our day of volunteering, IXLers teamed up with a Habitat homeowner-to-be who was accruing sweat equity. Together, we built a linen closet that was going to be installed in a new home. It was very rewarding to be able to work directly with the people who benefit from Habitat’s services; when we finished the closet, we all signed it to wish the new homeowner well.

IXLers also lended a hand by sorting, disassembling, and removing nails from reclaimed trim that will be sold at a local Habitat ReStore. Habitat for Humanity of Durham is partially funded by sales from Habitat ReStores—so we knew that by helping reclaim building materials, we were not only reducing waste from build sites, but also supporting future Habitat for Humanity efforts.

Since its founding in 1986, Habitat of Durham has helped over 400 local families become homeowners and we were happy to represent IXL as we gave back to the community. For more information about Habitat for Humanity of Durham or to volunteer, visit http://www.durhamhabitat.org.
