IXL Lends a Hand to Help Students Write Personal Statements for College

On October 22, 12 IXL employees volunteered as writing tutors at 826 Valencia’s 9th annual Personal Statement Weekend. At Personal Statement Weekend, under-resourced San Francisco Unified School District students can get assistance with drafting, revising, and polishing their college application essays. The event took place at Mission High School, and over two hundred local high school students participated this year.

Great Outdoors: IXLers Beautify a Bay Area Park

On the last Saturday of August, a group of IXLers headed to San Francisco to assist the SF Recreation and Parks Department with a park beautification project. In Chan Kaajal Park opened in June 2017 and was the first park to be developed in San Francisco in over a decade. Formerly a parking lot, In Chan Kaajal is now a vibrant space for neighborhood residents—and IXLers had a great time contributing to this community hub.

For the second consecutive year, IXL participated in our local Relay for Life event in Millbrae, California. On July 22–23, a team of IXLers walked for 24 hours to remember lost loved ones, honor survivors of all types of cancer, and raise money to help the American Cancer Society in its efforts to make a global impact on the treatment and cure for cancer.

Science for all! IXL at North Carolina’s Triangle SciTech Expo

On April 8, IXL’s science team headed to North Carolina’s most popular museum—the North Carolina Museum of Natural Science—to host a booth at the Triangle SciTech Expo. The science-centric event, which attracted over 5,000 visitors, was part of the statewide North Carolina Science Festival. IXL was proud and excited to be among the more than 50 science-themed booths from industry, nonprofit, and academic organizations.

On Saturday, February 4, IXL volunteered at the Millbrae Education Foundation (MEF) Walk-A-Thon for the second year in a row! The MEF is a non-profit, parent-run volunteer organization that raises essential funds to provide technology and music education for the 2500+ students in the city of Millbrae. The MEF held a district-wide walk-a-thon this month to raise money for these programs—including IXL, which is used by 3 out of 5 schools in the district.

IXL Helps an Urban State Park Blossom

Last Saturday, a group of IXL volunteers helped an organization called Literacy for Environmental Justice (LEJ) with an ongoing ecological restoration project at Candlestick Point in San Francisco. The leaders of this project, the Candlestick Point Eco-Stewards, hope to restore the area and open up San Francisco’s second campsite. The campsite will focus on youth involvement and will feature activities like kayaking and paddle boarding.

IXL Employees Share Their Love of Science

During the first weekend of November, thousands of people descended on San Francisco’s AT&T Park to share their love of science. Saturday’s Discovery Day was the final event of the weeklong Bay Area Science Festival and boasted 150 booths with activities for science enthusiasts of all ages. For the first time in the festival’s 6-year history, IXL sponsored a booth—and the day was a great success for everyone!
