How IXL prepares students for the fully digital SAT®

This article was updated on March 3, 2026

In case you missed it: PSAT and SAT® test takers in the U.S. are saying goodbye to pencil and paper.

As of spring 2024, the SAT® is administered as a fully digital exam. The online format also brings minor changes to exam length and question types.

But rest assured: IXL already has everything you need to help learners prepare for the test. Our digital learning platform gets students comfortable with answering questions online, taking assessments digitally, and more. Let’s take a look at how IXL can help your students excel on the digital SAT®!

Adaptive exam questions

With the digital format, the SAT® will be adaptive to each test taker. Students’ performance in Module 1 of the exam will be used to generate the questions they see in Module 2 of the exam.

Similarly, IXL’s LevelUp Diagnostic in Real-Time mode adapts to each learner to deliver an individualized assessment. As students answer questions, LevelUp chooses the next best question to ask, honing in on their knowledge levels.

Complex topics and questions

IXL’s comprehensive high school curriculum gives students in-depth exposure to a variety of question types, similar to those they’ll encounter on the SAT®. For example, in addition to multiple choice questions, the digital SAT® will now have fill-in questions for math.

The following side-by-side comparisons of IXL skills and SAT® questions show how IXL can help students practice answering similar math and ELA questions online:

Plus, IXL’s scaffolded skills ease students into higher difficulty levels, preparing them for the rigorous nature of college entrance exams. If students submit a wrong answer on IXL, they always receive immediate feedback to learn from mistakes and build a stronger understanding of the material!

Personalized SAT® study guides

IXL StudyWise allows admins, teachers, and students to create personalized SAT® study plans by entering scores from a prior test or practice exam and receive a custom list of the exact IXL skills students need to work on to improve scores. Plus, enter new scores at any time to ensure that recommended skills are always relevant!

In accordance with the fully digital SAT® format, IXL’s personalized SAT® study plans have also been updated to reflect the question types and subscores.

With tailored test prep at their fingertips, students can make bigger, faster strides in the right direction!
